Nick’s report

A very warm evening making it challenging for running, the highest number since I started the Handicap format in 2002, and a quality get together around the bar & BBQ (Thanks to Steve Wright for the gas!)

Congratulations to Carl and Nicki, for taking the Club 10km Championship Titles: the fastest Man's time since 2005 and fastest Lady's since 2004.

In general times compared favourably with last year but 3 noticeable improvements were from Sarah Tresler (3.30 quicker), a great performance, showing why Sarah made the Team at Hinckley Half, Jason Tomkins (2.28 quicker) and Paul Guest (1.33 quicker).  These lads are becoming a force within the Club and consistently make the counting scorers for League races.

It was great to see so many ladies making it the most attended race on record for the fairer sex.  Also nice to see a number of new faces and some good performances to match.

The first back across the line was Nick Cox who took the Handicap Title (3rd year running in the top 3; I must sort this out!!), 36 secs ahead of Brett Melhuish.  A very good performance by Carl Sommer taking victory by 51 secs from Dave Eggington. 3rd place went to Brett Melhuish with probably his best ever run since joining the Club (appears to have learnt how to race from Nicki).

Seema Patel was nearest the handicap time; obviously understanding the rules better than the rest!

Nicki took the Ladies race finishing 4th fastest overall and I think the 3rd fastest time ever for the Championship.  The ladies race after Nicki was even closer with Claire Quigley getting the better of Andrea Sommer by 43 secs. This was a reversal of the Swithland 10 km the previous week.

One final thing linked to the Leicestershire Road Running League, Huncote are doing well in all teams at present, the Men are currently 2nd in Div 1, whilst the Ladies are 5th in Div 1. Ladies B are 6th in Div 2.            The Mens Vets are 2nd in Div 1 and Lady vets are 4th.

I would like to encourage all those that took part in the Handicap to have a go at the league races and help to give the Club a chance.  With 4 races left we have a chance to finish top 3 in all categories. Prestwold is this Sunday (27th).

Thanks to all the helpers, it was much appreciated, especially the well laid out food (thanks Pauline & Jean). Also thanks to those involved in times & results, Andy, Phil and Clive.

Great Weston 5 – 3rd May

Nicki Nealon won this event, making it an amazing 10 out of 10. Nicki won the inaugural event in 2001 and has won every year since even in 2003 just 4 weeks after Rachel was born! Times have ranged from the record of 29.26 set in 2007 to the slowest of 32.49 in that eventful 2003.

The race takes place alongside a village fair in a small village in Northamptonshire and regularly gets in Runners World top 100 events. The course is challenging with a solid 3/4 mile climb up to the finish. Weather was cold, dry but windy therefore fairly slow times. Nicki won in 30.43, finishing 10th overall, 2nd was Jane Graham-Brown (32.10) and 3rd was Eva Riley (34.22). The Men's event was won by Stuart Nelson in a very good time of 27.15. John Heywood also competed, finishing 91st in a time of 37.07. There were 348 finishers, so a pretty good size field for the Bank Holiday.

Midlands XC Championships

Stafford Common

Saturday 30th January 2010

Huncote XC Team Manager, John Heywood was delighted to field a full Mens team for this years Championship. This builds on the success of turning out full teams for the recent County Championships.  Huncote, together with Wreake and Owls’ were the only Clubs to represent Leicestershire in this important XC Fixture.

Yet again sub zero temperatures tested the runners temperament and resolve. Cold fingers struggled to pin numbers on vests and frosty hard rutted fields turned the ankles. Some standing water with broken ice and muddy sections too made it a testing course but all six seemed to cope.  It must have been John’s kind encouraging words as we passed by on each of the three laps.

Well done to Andy Woolley too who managed to park the car almost yards from the Registration Tent. It was only later that we found we had parked in the Officials area!

HUNCOTE HASH

We hope you all enjoyed the Hash and entered in the spirit it was intended, which is a great chance to have fun and blow away the Christmas and New Year excesses.  The weather turned out to be perfect cross country weather, sunny but cold and crisp. The changed course proved to be very popular, giving spectacular views of the surrounding villages and countryside.

AYLESTONE MEADOWS XC

Sunday 6TH December

Report by Andy Wilford

The rain stopped and the sun shone.  An impressive turnout of 19 Harriers tackled this two lap course with a variety of terrain, mostly wet and muddy.  We made our HQ at a tree stump between Hatton Darts fine tent and Roadhoggs tarpaulin sheet.  Your ladies captain managed to persuade Nicki that we needed her to run to make up a team (I think I must have miscounted as we were only 1 short of two teams......I should learn to count, or tell the truth).  There were also one or two runners I was not expecting and fantastic additions to the team total they proved to be! 'Fast Eric' Carter led the mens team in a fine placing of 32nd followed by Graeme Slight in 44th place, Dave Lawson 75th, Keith Chambers 79th, Paul Guest 101st and Jason Tompkins in 111th. Paul Chadwick was 133rd, followed by Andy Wilford in 170th, Tom Corr 180th, Paul Nealon 192nd, Richard Thomas 200th and Mick Walton in 206th.

The Ladies were led home by Nicki Nealon who despite being boxed in at the start and complaining to coach Nick that she couldn't get past people, (Its true I was actually near enough to hear the exchange of views on the matter.) Her 1st place set the challenge for the rest of the team who responded well with Sue Gardner 39th, Sandra Ankers 58th and Bev Parry 64th completing the team placings, followed by Irene Forty 71st and Julie West winning the Battle of the sisters in 74th, beating Marie Wilford 75th in the final run in to the line, although Marie is demanding an inquiry as she was made to run the proper course (ie the slightly longer way around the last field whilst Julie and a West End Lady were sent the shorter first lap route !)

Then for the serious stuff.  Paul 'The Baker' Chadwick once again provided lemon drizzle cake and fruit and walnut cake washed down by a fine hot mulled wine This was complemented by a perfect chocolate fruit and biscuit creation provided by Mick Walton (with maybe a little help from Sal). This Derby Runner series just keeps getting better and better!  You really should try one of the races before the end of the season you won't regret it.

Midland 7 XC Championship

Report by Graeme Slight

Flat parkland course Heywood said. Flat as my bottom!  Four laps of leg sapping mud and hills.  There were flat bits but they were like swamps. Then there was the stream. It had to be crossed EIGHT times. A foot drop to hit the water, 9in of water plus whatever glue was below that. You then had to scale the mud bank to get out. It meant by the last lap over 600 pairs of legs had slipped, fallen in to, clawed out, fell back in again and drowned. I think Watty is still in there. Did anyone see him afterward?  A race for men with 'HARD' tattooed on their foreheads and bolts through their necks. What us idiots were doing there I know not.  Results are not important but here they are to serve as a role call on Tuesday.

SEAGRAVE WOLDS CHALLENGE

Saturday 14th November

6 Harriers took part in this annual 15.7 mile cross country event, around Walton-On-The-Wolds, Burton-On-The-Wolds, into the Estate of Prestwold Hall, following footpaths to Wymeswold, and then finishing back in Seagrave.  Once again the villagers presented the runners (and walkers) with a wonderful array of goodies at the 2 checkpoints and at the finish.  So as not to offend the hardworking volunteers, we reluctantly devoured our way through flapjacks, mince pies, chocolate fridge cake with bits of marshmallow in and… I think we’ll leave it at that!

RUNNING FOR RAINBOWS 5K

There were some fantastic marshalling performances in this inaugural event. Oh, and Andy Ball led the field from the start and was first over the finishing line.  Jason Tomkins claimed he was helping his sister round the course, but he could hardly keep up with her.  Vicky, one of ‘John O’Sullivan’s ladies’ was taking part in her first race and looked very comfortable. Last over the line was our very own Simon Jones, but this may have had something to do with the fact that he started about half an hour after everyone else!

Rich Thomas and Sue Gardner took part in this years Snowdonia Marathon in wet and windy conditions (No surprise there!).  Rich got a PB with a time of 4:18:12, whilst Sue also beat her last years time with 4:23:50, despite suffering with an extreme bout of cramp.  Well done to you both.

Claire Naing finished 3rd lady and achieved a PB in the Southport 'Natterjack' Seaside 10k, on 18th October.  The race was organised by members of her old athletics club, Southport Waterloo AC.  Claire says –

“On a fast and very flat course (on a rather cold day!), I somehow managed to finish 3rd lady, which was my first ever individual top 3 place in a road race! I also managed a personal best time of 41:50. I got a rather nice trophy and a bag full of kit from the local running shop! Not bad for 42 minutes worth of running”

Well done Claire.

BRUCE NADIN

Some of you may remember Bruce Nadin from Broughton Astley who ran with the club a few years ago.  Bruce was minister at Sutton Elms Baptist Church for 9 years and also chaplain to the Leicester City FC.

An recent article in the Leicester Mercury reported that Bruce is off on a new sporting mission to the wilds of South Africa.  He will work with the international Christian sports charity Ambassadors In Sport, on a mission to spread 'hope through football'. He will be going with his wife, Louise, who is a doctor, and their daughter, Grace, 11. His family fly out at the end of August.  If you want to read the full article then click here.

If you read this Bruce, then the Harriers wish you every success with your move.

NICKI NEALON  - LEICS & RUTLAND SPORTSWOMAN OF 2008

Nicki Nealon was presented with a Life Membership award at our recent HH Club 10K Championship on Tuesday 14th July 2009.  In the absence of the Chairman, Andy Wilford had the honour of presenting her with the Certificate. Nicki has been an outstanding ambassador for Huncote Harriers over many years. She has a phenomenal list of race victories to her name, locally, nationally and internationally.  Apart from her racing successes she has been the Ladies Captain, long standing Committee Member, current Club Secretary and a regular training companion for those who can keep up!  Nicki was recently awarded the Leicester Mercury Sportswoman of the Year Award.  Nicki joins founder member, Trev Longman, as the only other Huncote Harrier to receive Life Membership.

So, it’s not a washing machine as we all thought, it’s actually a 6 stone tumble dryer!  An article in the Leicester Mercury reveals the mad runner to be Kez Dunkley from Cosby, who is hoping to raise over £3000 for the national injured soldiers’ charity, Hope for Heroes, by completing the Leicester Marathon with the tumble dryer strapped to his back.  He’s certainly mad enough to be a Huncote Harrier!  Give him a cheer and a bit of change if you see him on your travels, or  you would like to sponsor him you can visit his Just Giving website – www.justgiving.com/kezdunkley

CLUB 10K - Nick Nealons report

A cool, pleasant if not slightly breezy evening for running, a good competitive turnout, and a quality get together around the bar & BBQ. Congratulations to Nicki and Wlodziu, for taking the Club 10k Championship Titles.  History was made as this was the first time that a Lady has won the title outright.

In general times compared favourably with last year but 3 noticeable improvements were from Michael Walton (6.01 quicker) an incredible performance, it just shows what a  year this guy has had. Evergreen Phil Watts (2.22 quicker) on the comeback trail and Andy Woolley (2.18 quicker), this following on from a superb performance at Hungarton (5th Club member home in 46.46).

It was great to see so many ladies making it the most attended race on record for the fairer sex.

The first back across the line was 'runaway bride' Laura Tresler, who took the Handicap Title, 21 secs ahead of Nick Cox (3rd home in 2008).

A good performance by Nicki Nealon gave her the overall victory by 1min 46 secs from WlodziuKula-Przezwanski.  Andy Woolley took a great 2nd place, and is having a great season since London.  Paul Nicholson managed to hold off a strong challenge from Paul Guest for 3rd place. (These individuals are a great asset for the Club and need to maintain this form over the last 2 league races).

Newcomer Becky Peel was right on handicap time, obviously understanding the rules better than the rest!

The ladies race after Nicki was even closer with Claire Naing getting the better of Andrea Sommer by 27 secs. Claire has also been vastly improving this year culminating in that excellent Edinburgh Marathon performance.  Marie Wilford took a fine 4th place, with consistently improving times throughout the year.

THAMES RING 250

Our intrepid ultra runner Carl Sommer took part in this new event which started on June 24th.  Billed as the longest non stop event ever to be staged in the UK, the challenge was to complete the 250 mile (approx) course in a time limit of 100 hours. The course was an anti-clockwise triangular route on the Thames Path and the Grand Union Canal & Oxford Canal towpaths.  Out of 38 starters there were only 11 finishers, and Carl finished in 7th place in a time of 91:07.  The photo shows Carl (looking like he’s just been for a jog round the block) being presented with his finishing momento.  Results

Midland Masters Track & Field Champ's.

Nicki & Kate Ramsey as 2 of Britians top F40's went head to head over 5000 metres & 1500 metres. Nicki took the 5000 in 17.49.2 breaking a 14 year old (1995) record of Judith Meeton of 18.33.6. Kate also inside the old mark in 18.29.3. Conditions were very hot with a slight breeze headon in the home straight.

The 1500 metres was just over an hour later and Kate took the title in 4.55.6 to also break the record set in 2004 by Jane Pidgeon (4.58.1), Nicki followed in 5.04.9, her first attempt at the distance for 29 years.

Nov 30th 2008

Norwich Half Marathon

Carl Sommer ran a pb in the Norwich Half Marathon (1.15.02) knocking more than 1 min 10 seconds off his previous best time. The chip time was given as 1.15.00 exactly. The race was comfortably won by Matthew Janes of Bedford & County in 1.05.44, over 3 mins clear of 2nd place. On a bitterly cold day with a fairly flat 2 lap course, the only climb was a stiff 400 metres at the end of each lap. Carl finished a fantastic 11th overall out of 2045 finishers. As Carl is still not fully recovered from his run across France it seems there may be quite a bit more to come.

Nicki also in the same event finished 3rd Lady and 1st vet in 1.20.49 finishing 35th overall. The Ladies race produced a close finish with local Lady Olivia Walwyn (1.17.29) just edging out Helen Decker of Ipswich by 11 secs.

This was Nicki's 3rd British Masters Title along with the Cross Country and the Track 10,000 metre; on all occasions She has when the events outright.

Gemma went from the front line at the Gun and went though the first mile in approx. 5.15, Nicki followed in 5.30. Pace then settled with Nicki running between 5.45 and 5.50 whilst Gemma was still moving away. At half way Sarah Haines (Harborough) was sitting in 3rd and Liz Hartney (Reading Road Runners and 1st over 40 at this years London Marathon -2.49.24 ) following closely in 4th. From then on the gap between Gemma and Nicki started to close , with Nicki catching Her at approx. 7.5km, Liz had moved into 3rd around the 6km point.

Nicki and Gemma ran side by side until the last 100 metres when Nicki finally broke the spirited effort of Gemma. Not a bad effort for an oldie!

BMAF 10,000 Metres

Nicki takes another British title, again winning the race outright. This victory also takes Nicki to a staggering 200 first places whilst being a member of Huncote Harriers. Nicki joined Huncote in the December of 1992 and achieved her 100th victory at the Shakespeare Half Marathon on 21st April 2002. Now just over 6 years later Nicki has completed another ton.

On a day the weather gave it's worst; strong winds and driving rain led to a flooded Horspath track. The Oxfordshire stadium just down the road from the famous Illifey track couldn't cope with the downpour and surplus water was building up on the inside of lane one. Nicki, standing out wearing the yellow of Huncote, went straight to the front from the gun, having to run on the outside of the lane to keep away from the worst of the water. Clocking consistent times of between 1.27 and 1.29, Nicki broke away from the field and looked comfortable while being buffeted by the wind. In a race incorporating all women and men over 70 (21 athletes in total), Nicki lapped the the entire field at least twice apart from runner up Helen ? another F40 athlete, who was 390 metres behind. A final time of 36.48 was pleasing given the conditions and solo effort. Second place athlete clocked approx. 38.20 and third was Andrea Dennison of Bingley Harriers was outside the 40 mins.

BARROW 6 LADIES ROUND-UP
Well done to all of you who braved the wind and ran yesterday at Barrow in the first Winter League Race at Barrow Whilst we were missing our top two ladies from last year due to other commitments a creditable Team performance was led by Kate Ruffell and Julia Sandford with able support from Sue and Bev who were followed in by Debbie Weeks, Sarah,Marie and Laura I was really pleased that we fielded 8 Ladies as in the past we have at times struggled to field enough for a team ! I hope you all enjoyed the event and would encourage you all to turn out at the next race on
Sunday January 27th @ Markfield
I would also remind you that the number issued is yours for the whole series and should be kept safe for the remaining Winter League Races I should also take this opportunity to remind you that the entry fee is £2.50 each race (we failed to collect this from 1 runner but do not know who please let me know if it was you so I can balance the books !!) For those of you who didn't run (for whatever reason) you missed a good event which really was worth braving the winter weather for I look forward to seeing more of you as the season progresses
Also don't forget training nights at Enderby Leisure Centre on Tuesday @ 7pm and on Thursday @ 7pm also for those who wish to run earlier on a Thursday John and Viv's Absolute beginners run at 6pm. Two or three ability groups have developed with some of our 'beginneers' now tackling 6-7 mile runs at a reasonable pace !

CANNOCK CHASE TRIG POINT
Nicki won this event in relatively comfortable style and in doing so finished 7th overall, the highest recorded position by a female athlete in the 22 year history of the event in a time of 1.49.16. Conditions were tough with strong winds and drizzle; the ground underneath was saturated with surplus water and mud in abundance. After a steady start Nicki followed pace setters Anna Bartlett (Mercia Fell Runners) and Zoe Flemming (Bowline Climbing Club / Birstall), through the first 2 checkpoints, then on the big climb upto Castle Ring Nicki forged a slight gap, which she maintained until the next checkpoint. Then comes the big decision with this navigational course; do you go through the woods on the shortest route or double back and take a stony but solid track. Nicki opted for the track hoping her road running experience would benefit, whilst the other girls went through the woods. As runners came through the road crossing it was evident Nicki had made the right decision as the gap had increased considerable to nearly 2 minutes. The 2 mile climb back up onto the moor just helped Nicki increase the gap and along with some good navigation allowed her to move ahead of the group of men in front. A relaxing run down to the finish secured a very pleasing result. The effect of increasing the mileage after the arm break seems to be paying off and after having treated this event as a training run things are looking good for the World Masters Half Marathon in March.
Ladies; 1st (7th) Nicki Nealon 1.49.16 2nd (20) Anna Bartlett 1.52.17 3rd (23rd) Zoe Fleming 1.53.31
Men 1st Tim Werrett - Mercia FR 1.33.20 2nd Tom Owens - Mercia FR 1.33.38 3rd Pete Vale - Mercia FR 1.37.32 10th (9th) Mark White - Team Pedaltech 1.50.55 28th (24th) Mark Wittering - Huncote 1.58.02 74th (65th) Martin White - Huncote 2.13.17
158 finishers Mark Wittering also had one of his best results for a while in winning the Vet 50 category albeit by only 7 secs. Martin White was the other Huncote member out on the fells, finishing in a time of 2.13.17. His son Mark White representing a tri club finished a very good 10th in 1.50.55.

Results of the fell race, great day weather pretty good after a wet journey to the event.

Severe downhill start followed by 2 miles along the lathkil river bed. Then up 200 metres of stone steps which made your thighs feel like they were burning up to the plateau.  Across numerous open fields with dry wall stiles, one of which was 6 foot high and a bit of a balancing trick on the top.

Back down a steep descent into the valley, a mile alongside the river, then back out and steep uphill to the finish. 7.1 miles of enjoyable scenery, followed by some great beer and good food.

Due to a freak training accident, Nicki has managed to chip a piece of bone off her left elbow, which will put her out for 5 - 8 weeks. She was out on a training run within the village and taking a tight corner hit her elbow on a sreet sign. Due to the break being right on the elbow joint she is having to wear a sling, as it cannot be plastered. Nicki was obviously hoping to retain her Title as winner of last years British and Irish Masters International at Falkirk, Scotland, when she led home Kate Ramsey making a Leicestershire 1-2. As you can imagine Nicki is very disappointed and making my life difficult at home, as I have to get everybody dressed and fed at present. After the Shepshed race in which Nicki took 20 secs of the course record but was only a disappointing third, confidence was high, as she had had a cold for the previous 10 days, feeling a tightness in the chest in the latter stages after having set a fast early pace. Some good news that has lifted the gloom in that Nicki has been awarded the title of Hinckley & Bosworth Sporting Alliance Sportswomen of the Year. At a presentation last night at the Marston Stadium, Hinckley, Nicki took the inaugaral title on a night when the local sporting talent was being recognised. Groby also provided the Disabled Sportswomen of the Year, Rachel Jarvis who has just returned from the Special Olympics in the far east representing her Country playing basketball. Club Membership Renewal 2007/2008

·       Membership Renewal is due from the 1st October 2007.
·        All members will receive a letter inviting them to renew.

·      Yet again the membership fee has been held at £10.

·      However at the recent AGM it was decided that a late payment levy of £5 would be applied to all members that do not renew before the 30th November 2007.

·      The reasons for applying this levy are that it costs the club money to chase up overdue membership fees. It can be up to 6 months into a membership year before we get sufficient membership fees collected to cover our affiliation costs with England Athletics etc. The club can no longer continue in this way hence the levy.

·      No members will be registered with affiliated bodies until their membership renewal has been received.

·      Do not delay; send your membership renewal back to the membership Secretary as soon as you can.

·      If you do not receive a letter then please contact the Membership Secretary as soon as possible at: Stephen.wright1@baesystems.com  or click here

Bev Parry's Grizzy Challenge

The Grizzly, Seaton, Devon.  September 9th 2007

This run is not for the faint-hearted!  It’s a 20ish miles multi terrain course, starting and finishing on the Esplanade at Seaton.  Within a few hundred yards of the start we were running along the pebble beach, looping back through the start again before climbing the first of many hills (the only one I was able to run up all the way up).   What goes up must come down so we were soon hurtling downhill to Beer, and then the Grizzly bit really began.  Another steep climb to the Beer cliff top caravan park then the running surface varied between paths across open fields, hills, cliff top coastal paths, downhills, more shingle beach, streams, bogs with mud up to the knees, hills, woodland paths, a hill with a near vertical peak where you had to crawl up on all fours, more shingle beach, a killer climb up the stairway from Branscombe Beach to the cliff top caravan park in Beer, more uphills, downhills and one last stretch of pebble beach before staggering over the finishing line back at Seaton. (Did I mention the hills?).

This was probably the hardest run I have ever done but it was also the most fun. Time wasn’t important, just crossing the finishing line was the aim.  The organisation was second to none, with plenty of friendly, encouraging marshals, enthusiastic crowd support, bagpipers, drummers, and even a man playing a didgeridoo! The Fire Brigade were at the finish to hose down our mud covered shoes and legs with sea water. And to cap it all – a tee-shirt that fits!!

The race is usually held in March but this year had to be postponed because of the Napoli disaster and the salvage operation on Branscombe Beach.  Entries are open now for the 2008 Grizzly on March 9th.  Details can be found on the Axe Valley Runners website.

Nicki Nealon taking part in the 5.3 mile as a warm up for the Cardiff 10km (9th Sept) won this multi terrain event outright in a time of 31:43, taking 1 second off the overall course record. Runner up was Barry Warne of Nene Valley Harriers over 3 mins behind in 34.55. The course record holder from 2004 Kyle Barber was 3rd in 35.10, just passing our own Nick Tomkins (4th overall and 3rd male in 35:15) in the last quarter of a mile. Nick had lead the men in pursuit of Nicki for the first 2 miles, but the pace was too much to hold and reluctantly he had to give way. Paul Nealon was 6th overall (5th male) in 36:40 and Angie Tomkins had a superb final half mile to come through and take the 3rd lady position in 47:48.

In the 10.6 mile event Andy Ball had a solid run to finish runner up in 1:05:44 behind an outstanding performance from Gareth Briggs (59:59), who had travelled down from the Staffordshire Moorlands Club to Participate.

Rounded off by a kids fun run, village BBQ with Music and merriment, another great day out highly recommended.

27/08/07

Grimsthorpe Castle 10k - 27th August 2007 : This is a challenging multi-terrain event near bourne in Lincolnshire. It is incorporated within a superb family fun day in the castle grounds (highly recommended).

Nicki Nealon winner in 2006 had also set a new course record (38:31). The organisers had put up a challenge to repeat the feat in 2007. Even though the ground was in poor state due to the amount of rain and the numerous horses that traverse the area the competition was accepted. On the start line Nicola Clay of Stilton had sneaked up ready to do battle. Nicki though had prepared well and was fully focused on the very fast downhill start. Away and in the top 10, Nicki never looked back and at one point was threatening to move into 3rd overall. The men around were working hard; fighting to get in front whilst Nicola Clay had Nicki in sight was adrift of the pace. On the final climb up the steep grass bank it was clear Nicki would smash the record, duly doing so in 37:52 (9th overall) leaving Nicola Clay (12th overall) back in 38:24 (also inside the previous record).

The men's winner was Peter Tallents of Retford AC in 35:06, well clear of John Pike from Newham & Essex Beagles in 35:53. There were 354 finishers with another local athlete Ian Paramore of Barrow finishing 13th in 38:32.

Carl  Sommer 2:53

Brian Driver 4:11 (first marathon)

David Kirby 4:12

The real result was Carl’s performance. At the half way mark he was 30th but by the end of the race he was 16th and 4th senior. This time also gives him a 'good for age' entry into next years London. As usual though Carl seemed to be in the green zone, and it makes you wonder how far Carl still can go!

Andy Ball at the Nottingham Marathon - VERY WELL DONE ANDY

I finished in 12th place time 2:50:19 a PB. I was gobsmacked when I finished, was not expecting anything near that time at all. I was on for a sub 2:49 till 23 miles, then had my old problems back with my right leg giving up on me, so had to stop a few times to stretch it!

I felt great when I finished, just very hot, as the weather was great for supporting but not running.

Midland Vets - Chasewater

HARRIERS VETERAN STRENGTH STARTS TO SHOW

A good quality Huncote turnout proved successful as all our runners won prizes. A mild but very blustery day, produced relatively slow times for this 5km relay around the lake.

A new age category was introduced for the first time Men 35 – 49, in which we had 2 teams, effectively competing in the A and the B team races.

Tipton Harriers won comfortable, after taking the lead on leg 2, after Charnwood had led home the opening leg with Derek Guess.

 1st Tipton Harriers Total Time 65.49;  2nd Birmingham Rowheath 69.35;  3rd Huncote Harriers 70.13

Kingsley Cook 17.01; Joe O’Flynn 18.04; Steve Copeland 18.07; Craig Sabin 17.01

7th Charnwood 74.35: Derek Guess 16.22; Mark Whitmore 19.19; Peter Mensky 19.13; John Barker 19.41

Huncote was also 1st B Team Total Time 75.17

Graeme Slight 18.02;  Andy Ball 18.14;  John Heywood 20.31;  Mike Bradford 18.30

Fastest man on the Day was Aaaron Keene of Tipton in 16.03

The Ladies took the W35 Team Title in a Total Time of 63.54: Nicki Nealon 19.28; Sandra Stevens 22.47; Jo Copeland 21.39;  Nicki was also fastest Lady on the day, even though She is struggling with a back injury.

Our final runner was Andrew Stevens who made up a Composite Team finishing 1st in that category in total time of 59.11.

Andrew Wadman  - Unattached 17.13;  Andrew Stevens – Huncote 22.04;  Nicki Thompson – Lady - Charnwood 19.54

We will follow this up with the Livingstone Relays at Loughborough on 16th April and the big one, The British Masters Road Relays at Sutton Park on 20th May. The Men V40 will have an 8 leg event, V50’s – 6 stage and Ladies W35 – 4 stage, W45’s – 3 stage.  We hope to put a Team in all these age categories.

March 06

I ran the Forest of Dean Trails ½ marathon on 19/3, and finished 24th out of a field of 1300 that had entered. I was pleased with my position but not my time as I was looking for  84mins but managed 85.47 This was down to the fact the course was quite hilly in parts and I had lots of problems with my right leg, after about 4 miles. I was therefore stopping quite a few times to stretch it. It did not help that it took me over 2 hours to get there, and I took a wrong turn, so turned up with 15 mins to spare. I just had time to get changed and get to the start, no warming up or stretching! Apart from all that, I would recommend that people give the race a go, as it is all ran through the forest so great scenery. The weather was great as well not a cloud in the sky.

The Belvoir Challenge 15 and 26 miles

These events were definitely a ‘challenge’, difficult terrain, extreme cold and that added element of navigation.  The Harriers fell running and distance boys split up to take on the challenge of the 2 events.  Starting at Harby Village the course takes into account the undulations on and around the Belvoir escarpment in the Vale of Belvoir.  Beautiful scenery, but not so good underfoot especially after the recent heavy rain.

In the 15 miler, performance of the day must go to Nick Nealon finishing 6th out of 609 finishers in 2.11.05.  This on a background of limited training and coming home last on most Tuesday night training runs.

John Heywood was next Harrier home in 21st in a time of 2.16.16, with Chris Hevey rounding up the Team in 58th in 2.27.59. the event was won by Stephen Shanks from Holme Pierrepont in a time of 1.56.55.

The 26 miler saw Mark Wittering first home for the Club in 8th place in 4.04.51, Carl Sommer next in 18th place in 4.24.31 and Martin White in 23rd in 4.33.52.  The race was won by Paul Scholte of Peel Road Runners in 3.49.29.

Race Report from Trig Point Race, Cannock Chase 15 miles fell race

A bitterly cold day with continuous snow flurries greeted the smallish but quality field for the re-emergence of this excellent race. A small band of Harriers joined life member Trevor Longman on the start for this challenge where route choice can be paramount to success.  The start was quite a swift affair considering the uphill nature of the first mile and as a result Trevor had forged a gap on Mark Wittering and Nicki Nealon, who due to Nicki's lack of navigation skills were staying together.  Chris Hevey then followed with Martin White in close attendance, all members being in the top half of the field.

On leaving the rifle range (check point 1), Trevor made a navigational error, drifting too far south, thus allowing Mark and Nicki to move ahead as all runners linked up with the Heart of England Way footpath.  At the half way point (checkpoint 3) all 3 where in the top 15 and going well, but after registering at check point 4 the fun begins.

The option of partly retracing your steps and staying on a solid track or navigating the dense woodlands, would be crucial.  All the Harriers being the adventurous sort opted for the more difficult but shorter route, without the knowledge that felling had been going on in the woods and all paths had either been covered or blocked by trees.  Trevor being more adapt to the terrain pushed on leaving Nicki struggling whilst Mark was having to bide his time.  As they hit the clearing and descended rapidly to the track it was noticeable that Trevor coming out slightly further North had picked a better route. A reference to Bambi on Ice seemed appropriate to Nicki as she tip toed / slid down the steep embankment to rejoin the track, with Mark waiting at the bottom laughing.  Trevor was now on a surge whilst Mark and Nicki had lost time and also a couple of places.

The penultimate checkpoint is an interesting one, being partially hid from the main tracks by bushes and trees and with a number of ways to get to it.  Trevor hit it right on and was now up to 10th, whilst Mark and Nicki struggled to locate even with the help of a fellow athlete.

Final Placings: 1st Tim Werrett 1.33.17;  2nd Pete Vale 1.33.53;  3rd Rob Little 1.40.25;  9th Kate Burge 1.52.08 1st Lady; 10th Trevor Longman 1.52.18 1st V50;  17th Nicki Nealon 1.54.04 2nd Lady;; 18th Mark Wittering 1.54.07 4th V50;  43rd Chris Hevey 2.05.24 14th V50;  46th Martin White 2.08.17 15th V50

Autumn 2005

Nicki's England cross country campaign finished slightly disappointingly in Dublin at the weekend finishing 4th 3 seconds off the bronze medal position, but being second England counter helped Team to Silver Medals behind Ireland. The winner was Annette Kealy (World Masters 5000m Champion from San Sebastian). Nicki has been suffering slightly from a chest infection, its just one of those things with the timing.
